Ayurvedic Remedies For Arthritis of South Africa

Herbs can be very effectively used in the treatment of arthritis. Some of the most commonly used herbs in the treatment of arthritis are,

1. Cayenne pepper.
2. Licorice
3. Alfalfa
4. Ginger
5. Buchu
6. Chaparral.

Cayenne pepper: Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, the active ingredient which helps to relieving pain by inhibiting the transmission of pain signals from nerves in the muscles and joints when applied to the skin. Topical application of cayenne pepper four times daily on the affected area can give effective result. Prepare the mixture of cayenne pepper by adding 1 oz of cayenne pepper to the 1 quart of rubbing alcohol. Allow the mixture to infuse for three weeks, agitating the bottle each day. Apply this infusion in to affected area for 10 to 20 minutes and wipe away after use.

Licorice: Licorice offers significant anti-inflammatory effect by blocking the inflammation receptors. It has been used effectively in the treatment of arthritis, allergies and other inflammatory disease that put excess stress on the adrenal gland. Long time use of licorice can cause hypertension in some people. Taking two capsules of licorice is recommended in the treatment of arthritis.

Alfalfa: This is a nutrient rich remedy useful in the treatment of arthritis symptoms, nourishes joints and alleviates the inflammation. It is better to use alfalfa tea rather than powder or capsules because it is the pure form and more easily assimilated to the body. Prepare the tea by placing 1oz of alfalfa in a pot and cover with 1 quart of water. Boil the decoction for 30 minutes. Strain and consume the decoction throughout the day. Use the remedy for approximately three weeks and suspend for one week and begin the regimen again as needed.

Ginger: Ginger is primarily known as culinary herb. It contains gingerol the active ingredient can relive the muscle and connective tissue inflammation associated with the arthritis. Sometimes ginger can cause heartburn.

Buchu: This is a herb native of south Africa, Africans are used the leaves of this herb for the treatment of water retention and in kidney problems. The oil contained in the buchu leaves can reduces the pain and inflammation of both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. This herb may lower the potassium, a mineral that helps maintain muscles tone and strength.

Chaparral: This is also known as stink weeds. This herbs contain chemicals that offer anti-inflammatory benefits, reduces the pain and stiffness. However the scientific studies are only done in the animals so there is no evidence that chaparral helps relieve arthritis symptoms in human.

Ayurveda and the Heart

According to Ayurveda, the heart is one of the three main marmas (vital organs). There are many types of srotas (channels) responsible for the circulation of various materials like dhatus (tissues), energy, wastes and prana (life air). Prana vaha srotas, which are responsible for the flow of prana in the body, are the main srotas. The heart is the root of prana vaha srotas. All the main blood vessels originate from the heart. The heart is also the seat of the consciousness or soul. It is also related to ojas (vital fluid), which sustains the consciousness or soul and keeps the person alive. Modern science too emphasizes the importance of the heart. The heart is the basis of life and we should take proper care of it. The heart is the seat of emotions like love. So, to establish love, harmony and peace, it is important that one has a healthy heart.

Taking care of your heart

According to Ayurveda, ama is the main cause for heart diseases. Ama is the toxic material that is produced by undigested food. Therefore, one must make sure that one eats only the amount and type of  foods one can digest properly.

Avoid over-eating and eating frequently. Eat a light breakfast and dinner. Lunch should be the main meal. Milk products, fried foods, cold foods and acidic foods should be taken in small quantities. White flour products, and foods that contain chemical preservatives and additives should be avoided. Animal products, especially red meat, are not good as they take a long time to be digested, and create a lot of toxins in the stomach.

Seasonal fruits and fresh vegetables (steamed or cooked), wholemeal bread or chapatti, salad, sprouts, vegetable soup, buttermilk, cottage cheese (paneer), a little quantity of fresh milk and ghee (clarified butter) make up an ideal list of food items to choose from. Anything sweet should be taken in moderation. Honey and jaggery are healthier than purified sugar.

Amla (Indian gooseberry) is very beneficial for the heart. It can be taken fresh, preserved or in powder form.

A very common cause of heart diseases is mental stress. Regular practice of yoga and pranayama (breathing exercises) reduces stress levels. Also, meditation has been scientifically proven to prevent as well as cure heart diseases.

A gentle head massage with or without oil several times a week is very beneficial. A full-body self-massage with oil once a week is also good.

Too much tea, coffee, alcohol and smoking is not good for the heart and should be given up. They weaken the liver and digestive power, and so form ama.

Drinking water kept overnight in a copper pot strengthens the heart.

A herb that has been scientifically proven to prevent and cure heart diseases is Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna). It can be taken in powder form or the bark of the tree can be boiled to make a tea.

Rudraksha, which is a fruit from a tree found mainly in the Himalayas, also has a beneficial effect on the heart. These seeds can be strung together and worn in the form of a necklace, or the seeds may be soaked in water overnight and the water should be taken early in morning.

Obesity is a very common reason for heart disorders. If you have put on some extra pounds, you must reduce it by physical exercise and diet control.

Heart disease is more prevalent around the globe today than it was in the early times mainly due to diet and lifestyle discrepancies. Ayurveda heart healing strongly emphasizes on the merits of consciously acknowledging aahara (the balanced diet) and vihara (the right lifestyle). Heart Disease Insight
In Ayurveda, heart disease is termed as Hridya Roga. This is mainly believed to manifest due to imbalance and vitiation in Vatta dosha or the air humor of the body. The heart disease subsiding herb of Arjuna is a holder of many natural properties by the virtue of which the herb provides natural nourishment to the heart. The heart healing herb of Arjuna essentially strengthens the heart while improving the blood circulation and aiding in stimulation of the vital organ of the body.
 Shatawari
 Another heart healing herb is Shatavari or Asparagus distinguished by medicinal properties of being potent, energizing and revitalizing and greatly invigorating. The Latin name of the herb is ‘Asparagus racemosus’ and Ayurveda recommends the natural herb of Asparagus as it tends to cause a decrease in the Vatta and Pitta doshas. Therefore, the herb of Shatavari is believed to be highly virtuous for the heart. A regular intake in the form of powder or juice is generally recommended for heart patients because it is believed to overall improve the functioning of the vital organ.
Lahsuna
Heart disease management also considers regular intake of Lahsuna or Garlic as it is believed to be a natural stimulant and a rejuvenator. The natural properties of this particular  herb make it to be another valuable Ayurveda heart tonic.
The use of Garlic in heart ailments is recomended by Ayurveda heart disease management and also to strengthen the heart. This is because of the basic property of the herb of Lahsuna to be a natural stimulant. Although there are a number of classical heart medications available that are fortified with this herb, you could easily swallow the juice of two to three fresh bulbs of Lahsuna daily on an empty stomach.
 Dalchini 
The Latin name of the herb of Dalchini or cinnamon is Cinnamomum zeylanicum.  The bark, leaves and oil extracted from cinnamon are generally used for medicinal purposes.
Cinnamon being robust, light and rough by nature and hot in potency has a natural healing effect on the heart. Also, heart disease management counsels one to three grams of powder of this herb for heart disease.  Ayurveda Heart Supportive Home Remedies
  • One of the heart supportive home remedies may be made with the heart healing herb of garlic. Two to three flakes of garlic are to be chewed, and the juice produced needs to be swallowed slowly, preferably on an empty stomach in the morning.
  • Another recommended heart supportive home remedy is to pound a small piece of bark of Arjuna and make it into powdered form. This powder may be taken twice a day mixed in a teaspoon of honey or along with warm water.
  • Also as another heart supportive home remedy of Arjuna you may make this herb preparation. Take one teaspoon of the powder of Arjuna bark. Boil it in a mixture of one cup milk and one cup water till half remains. This is to be taken twice a day.
  • Approx. one to three grams of the powder of the heart supportive herb of Cinnamom  may be taken two times.
  • Take half a cup of juice of freshly ground gourd. To this add 7 to 8 leaves each of basil and mint. Take this mixture 2 times.
  • Grapes are also recommended for those suffering from heart disease. This is because of being soft, slimy and cold by nature, grapes have a soothing and calming effect on the heart.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Heart Diseases General Outline


Till early eighties, it was widely believed that heart disease was virtually irreversible. This meant that once developed, the disease ran a progressive course until the coronary arteries were completely blocked. But recent studies have proven beyond doubt that not only it is possible to stall the process of artery blockage but also the blockage can be really reversed. This implies that through measures other than angioplasty (ballooning) or bypass surgery, it is quite possible to increase the blood flow to the areas of the heart that receive less than adequate blood supply due to clogging of the coronary arteries.

It is quite disheartening that the highly technological approach of the modern medicine literally bypasses the underlying causes of the heart disease. Ayurveda, on the other hand, aims at striking at the very root of the disease. A real cure for this disease is only possible if we adopt a holistic approach as the one advocated in Ayurveda and address the problem at its very root. Shunning the age-old principles of healing described in the Vedas- the great Indian heritage, as unscientific only just because they are old, is most unfortunate. However, due to the intensive research work of some doctors in the west, people now have come to believe that Heart Disease can be reversed.

There are some very effective natural treatments for regulating and strengthening the heart. Here are some of the recommendations that Ayurveda makes:

Nourishment : Use of Amla fruit as an excellent anti-oxidant that can help to prevent arterial damage from free radicals as well as nourishing the heart tissue. Amla can help boost the immune system and nourish the heart. Chywanaprash is a delicious nutritive herbal jam that contains Amla and is a real boost to the strength of the heart.

Increase circulation: A major cause of heart problems is due to hardening, inflammation or congestion of the arteries which can restrict blood flow as well as putting pressure on the heart muscle and tissue. Arjuna is one of Ayurveda's wonder herbs for strengthening the cardiac muscle, reducing arterial congestion and lowering blood pressure.

Reduce Blood fats and high cholesterol: If you suffer from high cholesterol try Triphala Guggul which combines a range of herbs known to tackle the causative problems of high cholesterol as well as reduce high levels of blood fats.

Relaxation: If you suffer from excess tension try using Ashwagandha . It is a wonder herb for helping reduce tension in the body and mind as well as strengthen the heart muscle.


Dietary suggestions: Eat a nourishing diet that removes all processed foods, poor quality dairy, poor quality oils, hydrogenated oils. Increase foods that are excellent for the heart. Use garlic, turmeric, ginger and saffron. Include whole grains, pulses and foods high in essential fatty acids such as hemp seed oil. EFAs are renowned for helping to keep arteries clean and the heart strong.

Cow's ghee, cow's milk and cows' butter are useful for the patient. Buffalo ghee and buffalo milk are not recommended. Stimulants like tea, coffee and alcoholic drinks are very harmful for such patients.

In addition to maintaining a healthy eating pattern, specific foods are often recognized as particularly heart-healthy. One of the most popular of these healthful foods is fatty fish with its high omega-3 fatty acid content. A recent study determined that women who consumed more omega-3 fatty acid laden fish (two servings weekly) had a reduced rate of death due to heart disease. These researchers found that this was independent of cardiovascular risk factors or other dietary sources that may influence the development of heart disease. Good sources of omega-3's besides fish are: flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, canola oil, olive oil, sesame oil, peanut butter and oil, sunflower seeds and oil, avocado, soybean oil, and safflower oil. Additionally, flavonoids found in tea and cocoa have been recognized for their antioxidant benefit. By blocking oxidative damage to LDL cholesterol and reducing platelet clumping, flavonoids may help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. An inverse association between dietary fiber intake and cardiovascular disease risk has also been proposed. This underscores the recommendation for increased consumption of fiber-rich whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables.

Lifestyle: Your heart needs a regular supply of oxygen and it also must not be overstressed. Practice light aerobic exercise and regular relaxation. Ayurveda would recommend some nourishing yoga practices, such as the dynamic 'Sun Salutation' as well as daily breathing practices (Pranayama). Ayurveda suggests exercising within your own limitations and does not encourage excessive exercise that leaves you tired. Yoga is exercise that leaves you energised and fitter.

All efforts should be made for the patient to have good sleep at night. Even rest during the day is essential. He should never be permitted to remain awake at night for long.

The patient's bowels should move regularly. If there is constipation, he is advised to take a glass of water early morning and go for a walk every day. A gentle laxative like Triphala choorna may be used if required
