What are the Health Benefits of Oil Pulling

Saturday 19 May 2012

Oil pulling, which is also known as oil swishing, is an alternative medicine. It has been a part of traditional Indian medicines since ages and finds a mention in the Ayurvedic texts as well. In the Charaka Samhita, it is known as the Kavala Gandoosha or Kavala Graha. This simple home remedy is known to cure and prevent a number of health conditions. It does not require any kind of training, as it can be performed easily at home. Originally, Ayurveda only made use of sesame oil for oil pulling, as compared to usage of a number of oils in modern times. Charaka Samhita says, "It is beneficial for strength of jaws, depth of voice, flabbiness of face, improving gustatory sensation and good taste for food. One used to this practice never gets dryness of throat, nor do his lips ever get cracked; his teeth will never be carious and will be deep rooted; he will not have any toothache nor will his teeth set on edge by sour intake; his teeth can chew even the hardest eatables." Over the years, as benefits of more and more oils were discovered, oil pulling was revived to help patients deal with chronic illnesses.

Method
The method of practicing oil pulling is extremely simple and can be done at home. The practitioner has to rinse his mouth with one tablespoon of sesame and sunflower oil for 15-20 minutes on an empty stomach. This means, one needs to do it before having breakfast. By doing this, the oil gets mixed with saliva. As you continue with the process, the oil viscosity of the oil changes and it turns white. Rinsing your mouth with the oil makes the oil swish and vigorously move in your mouth, just like a mouth wash. The oil gets thicker and changes from yellow to white in color. Once you have rinsed your mouth with the oil, wash it thoroughly with normal tap water, toothbrush or fingers. The taste may feel a little funny in the beginning, but effects of oil pulling will be seen if you perform the process daily.
